Just in case you didn’t hear, Manchester-born rock band Oasis are reuniting for their first world tour in 15 years! This news, plus the spectacular opening ceremony that marked the start of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games has made this week a show-stopper. But, you guessed it, it doesn’t stop there!
Lidl took a bite out of the luxury fashion market to win headlines galore, KitKat saw an opportunity to newsjack Oasis and online labour marketplace Taskrabbit won our hearts with some hilarious headlines. While Manchester hotel Maldron put a major downer on the week with a tech issue.
A collaboration with fashion designer Nikolas Bentel, the bag resembles the flaky pastry (paper bag and all!) and celebrates Lidl’s luxurious tasting, but wallet friendly, baked good offering that so many customers love.
Breakfast, but make it high fashion. We’re obsessed.
Jess Redfearn – Midweight Creative:“Lidl have made it look easy here. Quirky, fun, beautifully executed and deliciously simple. No wonder this has achieved national coverage across the board and landed a two-minute feature on This Morning. Would have been even more perfect if it launched during Paris Fashion Week in September!”
KitKat get social
KitKat jumped on the news of Oasis’s reunion with a simple reactive post of just three words: “Had a break”.
The Instagram post’s caption refers to the first date of the band’s highly anticipated world tour, “4th July 2024. Can’t wait” before going on to say, “But maybe not such a long break next time, eh?”.
A great example of some reactive content that is a no brainer for the iconic brand.
Mairi Hale – Senior Social Media & Influencer Manager:“KitKat’s famous tagline has never been so relevant and they seized their moment! Simple, yet effective…this reactive post will, I’m sure, mean other brands will be looking at KitKat for inspiration to follow suit.”
Supersonic timing for Taskrabbit
Online marketplace Taskrabbit, the website where you can buy freelance labour such as local handymen, hit PR gold this week with some wonderfully witty poster copy coinciding with the Oasis’ world tour announcement. “Oh, Sally can paint”, “Don’t flap pack in anger, and hire Usain” and our personal favourite, “Today is gonna be the day that I’m gonna hang it up for you”, are three of the famous Oasis lyrics the brand has refined for its latest ad campaign.
The people of Manchester will be singing these bus ads out loud!
Lucy Jones – Junior Copywriter:“Impeccable timing, perfect positioning and incredible copy. Take a bow, Taskrabbit!”
FAIL
Definitely maybe a fail
This week’s fail is unfortunately close to home with Manchester’s Maldron Hotel suffering a “technical issue” amidst the Oasis reunion excitement, which resulted in cancellations and fee increases on key Heaton Park dates.
In an apology post on Instagram, which has now had its comments turned off, the hotel explains that many customers will lose out and need to find alternative accommodation.
Liam and Noel Gallagher may have reconciled, but we’re not sure customers will be able to forgive Maldron…
George Evans-Jones – Account Manager:“Some Might Say this was an honest mistake, but Little By Little, people Half the World Away were outraged by it. The chain clearly hoped their mistake would Cast No Shadow, but Listen Up, reputations can Live Forever. This was a Supersonic FAIL.”
