Tom’s Brazen Farewell
5 December 2022
To My Fellow Work Experiencers…
Having just completed an action-packed, fun-filled, cream-crackering two weeks of work experience here at Brazen PR, I think that it’s safe to say that I’ve learned a thing or two (well, three to be precise), along the way.
Now, I know that getting a foot into the world of work experience can often feel like an ‘every man for himself’ kind of scenario, but being the kind soul that I am, I think that I ought to share a few noodles of yummy wisdom that I picked up during my time here at the famous ‘Ideas Factory’ to help you, dear readers. So, to my fellow band of intrepid work experiencers, I give to you THREE THINGS THAT I LEARNT FROM A BRAZEN WORK EXPERIENCE PLACEMENT.
Get Stuck In!
Public Relations is an industry that never sleeps. If you want to succeed you need to be prepared to dive in, head-first. That said, due to its fast-paced nature, it can also feel a tad intimidating. Writing that first press release? No thanks. Conducting your first email outreach? Fat chance. Pitching in a brainstorm? Good one. However, it goes without saying that the more you get involved, and push yourself out of your comfort zone, the more you will LEARN. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. In my experience, Brazen is a lot like Hogwarts, for there will always be help to those who need it.
Thankfully, with the help of a brilliant, caring and extremely erudite team, they helped me (and I am sure your future selves), every step of the way. I remember on my first day when I was pitching in a brainstorm for Chicago Town’s upcoming campaign. I was terrified. However, thanks to Brazen’s inclusive environment, I was able to voice suggestions that were taken on board as the lovely (and stylish) Peter carefully listened. That was a moment I won’t forget in a hurry.
Talk, Talk, Talk
This industry is not called PUBLIC RELATIONS for nothing. Don’t be afraid to chat to your fellow co-workers – and learn their names! After all they are there to help. Don’t get me wrong, when I first entered the office and saw twenty-plus heads turning in my direction, I was a little nervous to say the least. However, after the first thirty seconds, they took me in with their colourful and vibrant arms, and I felt immediately welcomed and a part of the Brazen family. The board were particularly welcoming. I remember when Peter came up to me to ask about my travelling during the quiz night, or when Nina carefully listened to my ideas during the BlanX brainstorm, and Sasha congratulated me on voicing my ideas. Everyone here at Brazen is a gem and a half, and for that I cannot thank them enough.
No one is asking you to discuss Nietzche’s dissertations or the latest geo-political situation in Taiwan, yet a little talk can go a long way during your work experience. Ask them about how they got into PR, or what they like most about Brazen. Be prepared, however, to answer a few questions yourself – the Brazen lot are quite a chatty bunch!
Understand the Company Culture
If you want to succeed in your work experience at Brazen, you need to know them like the back of your hand. Fundamentally, vibrancy is the name of the Brazen game. Whether through its diverse and fun people, or its plethora of social activities, every day at Brazen is always different, and undoubtedly interesting (just be prepared to enjoy a drink or five!)
Having interned at other PR companies across Manchester I don’t think that I can find a single business that enjoys fun (or VIA) as much as Brazen. If Brazen works hard (and boy, do they), it goes without saying that they play even harder. Cheers to that!
