Wallet Watchers in Cardiff: Christmas shopping, smart saving and wallets working overtime

The Wallet Watchers team, fronted by Married at First Sight’s Hannah Norburn, headed to Cardiff for a special Christmas edition – as the festive season ramps up and wallets across the UK start working overtime.

With Christmas shopping officially underway, we wanted to know how people in the Welsh capital are really approaching festive spending this year, what they’re buying, where they’re cutting back, and how they’re making every pound count.

The answer? Christmas is still king, but spending is sharper, savvier and far more considered.

Christmas comes first (just not at any cost)

Christmas dominated the conversation (shock!). Gifts for friends and family are still a priority, but big splurges aren’t.

Locals told us they’re opting for cheaper, more thoughtful gifts, often turning to eBay for personalised finds that feel special without blowing the budget. As one person put it: “I like gifting, I’m generous, but I never go bonkers.”

Second-hand savvy and festive hacks

Cardiff shoppers are getting smart with second-hand.

Facebook Marketplace, eBay and Vinted came up repeatedly, especially for kids’ items that won’t be used for long anyway. One local shared our favourite festive side hustle of the day: “I literally steal all my mum’s clothes and sell them on Vinted.”

Second-hand isn’t a compromise, it’s part of the plan.

Saving with structure (and discipline)

Saving habits in Cardiff are organised and intentional.

From spreadsheets and savings pots to strict “don’t use a credit card” rules, people are putting structure around festive spending. One popular trick? Adding items to an Amazon basket and waiting for the price to drop before committing.

Patience over impulse. We like it.

Festive Fatigue and a reset on what matters

Alongside savvy spending, there’s clear Christmas fatigue.

Locals spoke about over-commercialisation, rising costs and the pressure to spend more every year, but also a strong pushback. As one person told us: “Christmas is about family and being together. It’s not about stuff.”

And that mindset is shaping how Cardiff shops this season.

The Takeaway

Christmas spending in Cardiff hasn’t disappeared, it’s evolved.

People are still giving, still celebrating and still showing up for the people they love. They’re just doing it smarter, with second-hand platforms, saving systems and a clearer sense of what actually matters.

Wallet Watchers will be back next month with more real stories about money, spending and saving across Britain.

Until then, maybe it’s time to check your Amazon basket or raid a wardrobe for Vinted.
