Wallet Watchers in Liverpool: Summer holidays, smart saving and living within your means
The Wallet Watchers team, fronted by Married at First Sight’s Hannah Norburn, headed to Liverpool to uncover how locals are planning for summer, managing rising costs and making their money stretch further in 2026.
From dream holidays abroad to classic British caravan breaks, we wanted to know what people are prioritising this summer, how they’re saving and whether the cost of living is changing the way they spend.
The answer? Liverpool is still making room for fun but budgets are tighter, priorities are shifting and people are becoming far more intentional with their money.
Summer plans are staying on the agenda… but with a few compromises
Summer holidays are still important for Scoucers but people are approaching them differently.
Some Liverpudlians are still planning bigger getaways. One local reveals plans for “Disney World Florida” while Benidorm was on the cards for another. Many though have admitted that holidays abroad are no longer as easy to justify as they once were.
One local summed it up perfectly: “I used to go abroad twice a year… but money’s a bit tight this year.”
Instead, many are embracing staycations, caravan holidays and UK breaks that feel more affordable and nostalgic. As one person proudly put it: “Caravan holidays are like the staple of being British.”
The desire to escape is still there but the spending behind it is becoming more practical.
Saving smarter without sacrificing everything
Across Liverpool, saving habits are all about balance.
Locals shared practical advice for managing money without giving up the things they enjoy, from setting aside fixed percentages each month to being more mindful about everyday spending.
One popular mindset? “Put half in savings, spend half and you’ll get there eventually.”
Others spoke about cutting back on smaller luxuries where possible. Beauty treatments were a big example, with one woman explaining she’s started doing her own nails, eyelashes and hair at home because “it saves a lot of money.”
The overall feeling wasn’t about extreme budgeting or cutting out joy entirely, it was about making smarter trade-offs.
Living within your means
One phrase kept coming up throughout the episode: live within your means.
Liverpool locals were refreshingly honest about the pressures people are facing right now, particularly around rising food, drink and day-to-day costs.
As one interviewee explained: “It’s nice to have luxury stuff in life, but sadly, to a lot of people in Liverpool, the only luxury stuff they’ve got is food and drink.”
But despite the challenges, there was still a strong sense of optimism and realism. “You do want to keep living your life,” one local told us, while discussing the balance between saving money and still enjoying experiences.
The North vs South divide is still front of mind
The conversation also turned to the cost gap between the North and South, with London coming under fire for sky-high prices.
From £10 pints to expensive train fares and property prices, locals questioned the costs in the Capital but acknowledged things are getting pricier everywhere, demonstrating that there was also a sense that the financial squeeze is now being felt nationwide.
As one person put it: “It feels like things are getting more expensive up here but they’re probably getting more expensive down there too.”
The Takeaway
Summer spending in Liverpool hasn’t disappeared, it’s just becoming more thoughtful.
People are still planning holidays, enjoying themselves and making room for the things they love, but they’re doing it with tighter budgets, smarter saving habits and a much stronger focus on value.
Whether it’s swapping luxury beauty treatments for DIY alternatives, choosing caravan holidays over long-haul trips or sticking firmly to a savings plan, Liverpudlians are proving that being careful with money doesn’t mean giving up on living well.
Wallet Watchers will be back next month with more real stories about money, spending and saving across Britain.
Until then, maybe it’s time to rethink the holiday budget… or book that caravan.
