Hails & Fails – May 16th 2025

It’s been a week where the UK Eurovision entry, from country-pop trio Remember Monday, officially became a significant underdog with 50/1 odds to win, Princess Kate wore an olive-green Victoria Beckham suit in what is being described as a public show of support amid reported tensions within the Beckham family, and the Celebrity Traitors line-up was announced with Stephen Fry, Charlotte Church and Jonathan Ross among the contestants. But despite these showbiz stories grabbing the headlines, there’s still been plenty of room for some seriously top notch PR campaigns to break through the noise.

IKEA went on a flat-pack frenzy through London, KFC turned its gravy into ice cream and Ovo Energy showed us how to Do Energy Differently. It was not a great week for popular fashion brand Peppermayo though, after paying customers accused them of being tone deaf to supply concerns.

FLAT-PACK FRENZY ON WHEELS

IKEA brought the chaos of a post-shop dash to life with a hilarious new stunt this week. To celebrate the launch of its Oxford Street store and shout loudly about its home delivery service, the iconic Scandi Home store sent a taxi absolutely crammed with flat-pack furniture and home essentials zooming through the streets of London. It’s the all-too-familiar struggle of juggling a mega-haul – minus the heavy lifting! Funny and relatable.

KFC’S GRAVY JUST BECAME ICE CREAM

KFC has gone full foodie wild card by teaming up with Hackney Gelato to create the one thing you never knew you needed: Gravy Gelato. The rich, peppery goodness of KFC’s famous gravy has been whipped into a creamy, dreamy Italian gelato, delivering a mind-bending mix of savoury warmth and a hint of chicken.

But it’s not just a wacky flavour experiment. Every scoop sold helps support the KFC Youth Foundation, funding life-changing projects for young people across the UK. Bravo!

OVO’S APPLIANCES CAMPAIGN SPARKS ENERGY REVOLUTION

In a new campaign that’s anything but plug-and-play, OVO Energy has unleashed a swarm of unruly, power-hungry appliances in a campaign called Power Struggle. The campaign video shows rogue energy-guzzling fridges, toasters, and vacuums running wild – a perfect metaphor for energy anxiety in the home. And there’s a bonus…the energy company’s rewards scheme is gifting consumers two hours of free energy every week, putting control back into the hands of UK households. It has won loads of coverage this week.

FASHION LABEL SPARKS OUTRAGE FOR BEING TONE-DEAF

Down under fashion brand Peppermayo is feeling the heat as furious customers watch influencers bask in the latest brand gear online while their own orders sit in limbo. Promising paradise for influencers but delivering radio silence to shoppers, the brand’s apology, blaming “operational challenges”, only added fuel to the fire. Angry customers are now flooding the Competition and Consumer Commission, demanding action. Ouch!
