Top 3 Social Media Stories this week

WHAT DO PEOPLE TWEET @JACK ABOUT THE MOST?

If you think your Twitter mentions are looking busy, spare a thought for Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey. As the CEO and public face of the brand, he’s bound to receive a barrage of tweets and various requests each day – Mashable analysed the traffic and the most popular request is to BAN Donald Trump. Users cite his threat of nuclear war as being against Twitter policies – whilst we didn’t spot this particular clause in their terms and conditions, we can all agree that a Twitter without Donald would be a less interesting place.

EU TAKES A STRONG STANCE ON EXTREMIST CONTENT

In a stark change from their previous approach of allowing platforms such as Facebook and YouTube to remove extremist content voluntarily, the EU is apparently drawing together plans to impose fines on social networks that do not take action to remove such content within an hour. Recent studies showed that 24% of extremist content remained online for more than two hours, prompting Brussels to take a tougher stance on achieving progress online.

FACEBOOK ROLLS OUT STORIES HIGHLIGHTS

Taking inspiration from Instagram, Facebook is currently offering new ways for users to reuse content and is testing out highlights for their stories feature. Whilst the move doesn’t come as a surprise to many, it can provide great opportunities for brands who don’t necessarily want to invest time and money into content that disappears in 24 hours – and whilst there’s not much scope just yet for Facebook to monetize on the feature with ads, it’s only a matter of time before we see a bigger shift away from in-feed ads towards stories and highlights ads.
