Hails & Fails – December 24th 2021

Merry Christmas Eve to one and all – and haven’t we been gifted some fantastic PR campaigns in the run up to the big day this week?

Amazon Music enlisted Mariah Carey to make Christmas tube announcements, supermarket Morrisons used Christmas week to tackle food waste and Foxy Bingo revealed the nation’s favourite Christmas chocolates. It was an unseasonally difficult week for Prime Minister Boris Johnson however, after he was snapped quaffing wine with staff in the Downing Street garden during lockdown.

HAILS

Mariah Carey takes over announcements on the London Underground

Mariah Carey took over London Underground’s tube announcements to bring some “festive cheer” to commuters this week.

In partnership with Amazon Music UK, the singer is promoting her festive classic “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by taking over the intercom of London’s tube stations. “Hi darlings, it’s Mariah. Make my wish come true and please stand behind the yellow line at all times, proceed with caution, and don’t forget to ask Alexa to play ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ on Amazon Music,” she says.

Morrisons increases Xmas magic bags to beat food waste

Morrisons increased the amount of its Too Good To Go “magic bags” over Christmas week to help tackle food waste.

The supermarket made 50% more of the food bags between December 20 and December 24. The bags cost £3.05 and are filled with discounted food items worth around £10.

The food has reached its best before date but is still safe to eat – with the bags designed to cut down on the amount of food that gets chucked out.

And the media showed the campaign plenty of love this week.

Foxy Bingo gives us our favourite Christmas chocolates

A new survey conducted by Foxy Bingo had 2,000 Brits vote for their favourite chocolate among the tubs of Quality Street, Heroes, Roses and Celebrations.

We’re still scoffing the evergreen Maltesers Teaser from the Celebrations tub, as it came out on top spot with the majority of the vote. Next was the Purple One from the iconic Quality Street tub – it was the only chocolate from the classic tub to make the top ten list of popular chocolates, with the rest of the votes belonging to Heroes, Celebrations and Roses.

And the media showed the story plenty of love this week.

FAILS

Boris pictured quaffing wine in Downing Street garden

It’s not been a great year for the under fire PM but it got a lot worse this week when a photograph emerged of him drinking wine with staffers in the back garden of No10 during lockdown.

Government spokesmen insist it was a work meeting but the fact he was pictured with wine and cheese alongside his wife and up to 17 staff in the Downing Street garden during lockdown has the cynics raising eyebrows.

Bottles of wine are in evidence, there is a lack of social distancing and 19 people are gathered in groups across the Downing Street terrace and lawn.

The media has had an early Christmas feast with the fall-out.
