Hails & Fails – July 12th 2024

England have reached the final of the Euros and will face Spain this Sunday. But before it comes home and the King declares us all a national Bank Holiday (we hope he’s reading this and gets that hint), let’s enjoy some brilliantly creative Euro campaigns from what could turn out to be a monumental week for English football. One more time for luck… it’s coming home!

The Migration Museum made us stop and think mid Euros chaos, Brazen’s long-standing client Greene King poured for the nation and supermarket Aldi won a trend. Retailer Co-op didn’t join the rest of us in the spirit though…

It’s coming home

Charity The Migration Museum went viral this week with a powerful Euros campaign that highlights the number of England players from migrant backgrounds.

The ‘England Without Immigration’ campaign aims to challenge anti-immigration opinions by showing just how much immigration has shaped the England squad into a semi-finalist/finalist success.

George Evans-Jones – Account Director: “This is a stark visual representation of the impact immigration has had on the England men’s football team. Positioned like a formation on the pitch, its message is accessible and easy to see. The bold red strike throughs cast against the white background really drive the point home. As good as this team is, I’m not sure we’d have got this far if we lost 8 players!”

Aldi win trend

If you read last week’s H&Fs then you’ll know that M&S recently broke the internet by revealing reality stars Mark Wright and Spencer Matthews as their menswear ambassadors… Mark and Spencer.

But that was just the beginning! Matalan soon followed with Matt and Alan, followed by Pri and Mark and John and Lewis…

But our favourite response to the trend is this one from Aldi.

Lucy Jones – Junior Copywriter: “While everyone was off looking at their colleague’s name badges, Aldi did what they do best and made a classic nod to their legal team… Cuthbert-gate lives on, and we’re so here for it!”

England scored, Greene King poured

Brazen client Greene King partnered with footballing legend Jimmy Bullard to support the nation in its quest for footballing glory… by giving away free pints if England scored!

Unable to guarantee a win, the leading pub company and brewer decided to guarantee a free pint regardless of the final score – just as long as England hit the back of the net… which they did.

Same again Sunday?

Daisy Vickers – Account Director: “We LOVED working on this one with our client Greene King. There is no better atmosphere to watch the football than the pub and what better way to celebrate the Three Lions and the fans than by offering customers a free pint when England score…let’s face it, it was bound to happen. Working with ex-footballer Jimmy Bullard really put the cherry on top of the cake and the results speak for themselves! We may have seen the coverage come home, but on Sunday let’s hope football does too!”

Co-op upsets pubs

Co-op’s latest Euros advert caused outrage among pub owners this week for encouraging people to stay in and enjoy a two pizza and four beer deal instead of going to a pub to watch the football.

Calling the ad ‘disgraceful’, Campaign for Pubs has accused the supermarket of “openly and deliberately undermining pubs and publicans’ livelihoods”; calling for it to be taken off the air with immediate effect.

“You and your management team must surely be aware of what a challenging time it is for pubs and publicans, yet here you are, a supposedly ethical business, openly and deliberately undermining pubs and publicans’ livelihoods at this difficult time”, said publicans in an open-letter to the supermarket.

Thomas Owen – Chief Reporter: “Co-op really missed the mark with this one. At a time when the hospitality industry isn’t exactly thriving, it’s not a great look to be seen encouraging punters to boycott pubs in favour of staying at home!”
