My Journey to Becoming Brazen Live’s Newest Recruit

After happily working at Brazen for a month as the newest recruit to the Brazen Live department, I figured it was about time I sat down and introduced myself. One thing you should know about me is that I have a wildly unhealthy obsession with pop culture – films, TV, video games; I just love it all! So, what better way for us to get acquainted than for me to tell you all about my recent life through the medium of pop culture references?

“Film Studies?? What are you going to do with that? Gonna be the next Spielberg are you?” and other such phrases are ones that I became accustomed to during my time at university. But after having an absolute riot for 3 years (as well as working hard of course), I managed to walk away with a First!

For a year or so after uni, I lived the life of a walking-talking cliché: an arts graduate working in a coffee shop. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking the Barista life. In fact, they are some of the most under-appreciated people in the modern working world. But when I realised my (literal) First Class creative talent was being squandered, I felt enough was enough and decided to leave in pursuit of a more fulfilling career. That being said, I still make a damn fine coffee.

Now, the best and worst thing about quitting your day job is you find yourself with more free time than you know what to do with. The plus side was that I had more time to focus on my voluntary video production work (an absolute must for any budding creative professional) but, alas, voluntary work doesn’t pay the bills, so the job hunt began. But the life of the unemployed certainly isn’t an easy one, so some days were spent like this…

Others like this…

But most days had to be spent like this…

Writing my CV, amending my CV, filling out applications, filling out applications that ask me to attach my CV then have the nerve to ask me to type it out again in the form, sending emails to anyone who would listen; it was a seemingly never-ending battle against an overwhelming amount of competition. This is when Brazen rode into the scene…

The job posting for Brazen’s newest Creative Producer was like a beacon of light in the dark, hellish cycle of application and rejection. I wasted no time in applying as I felt like this was the perfect role for me. The months of job searching appeared to lead up to this moment and the path to landing my dream job was suddenly much clearer. And before too long, I got offered an interview! So I suited up…

…walked into the office and gave it my all. This was my time to shine and prove to the lovely people at Brazen that I was the one they were looking for.  Thankfully, they agreed and offered me the job!

So now here I am. Stepping off the bus on my first day and the feeling of pride and accomplishment that overcame me is one that I won’t be forgetting anytime soon.

Joining the Brazen Live team is certainly the start of something amazing for my professional career. My thanks go out to everyone at Brazen for welcoming me as one of their own, but in particular I’d like to thank the wonderful Sarah. She is the Obi-Wan to my Anakin, and under her training and support, I’m already developing more than I thought possible in such a short time. I’m working on such a varied amount of projects and all the while she keeps me on my toes and ensures that I’m staying creative. May the force be with you Master Hodgetts.

And if you, dear reader, related to my story and find yourself in a similar position of seeking that first dream job, then follow this advice: don’t panic! Job hunting can be daunting and oftentimes feels hopeless in the creative industry. But just keep the faith that one day your hard work will pay off.
