TWITTER WANTS YOU TO UNFOLLOW OLD FRIENDS

In a controversial move, Twitter has begun recommending users to unfollow in a bid to remove ‘clutter’ from your feed. The network has suggested this move is designed to increase engagement and make content more relevant to each user by omitting posts from those you engage with least often. Twitter is also testing a new nested layout for post replies to make conversation threads more easily identifiable, similar to how comments appear on Facebook, in another bid to boost engagement.

WILL EMBEDDED LINKS SAVE FACEBOOK STORIES?

Facebook is testing the option to add embedded links within Stories in a bid to drive up usage, as adoption rates lag far behind similar formats from Instagram, WhatsApp and Snapchat. The links are clearly signposted in a callout box, in contrast to the hidden ‘swipe up to view’ link format in Instagram Stories, making them an appealing option for brands looking to drive click through and sales.

SNAPCHAT ADDS BOOMERANG CLONE ‘BOUNCE’

Snapchat had launched a new ‘Bounce’ feature which will be particularly recognisable for Instagram fans, due to a striking similarity to Instagram’s Boomerang format. The tool enables Snapchat users to transform any video into a looping GIF format, with a slider option to choose the starting point within the clip. Meanwhile this week, Snapchat has also announced the option to preserve Snaps within one-to-one threads for up to 24 hours, instead of having them disappear immediately after being viewed.
